Varengeville-sur-Mer, 10 km south-west of
Dieppe
in Northern Normandy, about three hours drive from Brussels. The village is well known for the artists that lived and worked there (Monet, Bracque – the last is buried at the
church and sea cemetery at the end of our street).
White cliffs and
large beaches are at
walking distance from the house. Some beaches are wild and untouched, with
incredible rock formations, others are more touristic. The house is embraced by woods within a rolling landscape of fields. It is at the sea but in the countryside.
The village is a about one km away: butcher, the best bakery of the area, general store, newspaper store, restaurant, pharmacy, doctor, garage… all in one street.
You find supermarkets at
Offranville (Champion) and
Dieppe (Auchan).
The agricultural area hides charming villages, which are well connected by a good road infrastructure. Good for bike rides.
Birds, butterflies and squirrels, cows and horses complete the natural environment. The sky at night is a wonderfully full of stars. Nothing spoils the silence and peacefulness of the place.
Sports
There are plenty of walking and biking possibilities in the area. You can search here for cycling routes in the region. You can rent bikes in Offranville and in Quiberville-sur-Mer. Swimming in the sea, as well as in the swimming pool along the sea in Dieppe. Beaches at Quiberville-sur-Mer or Pourville-sur-Mer are ideal to play with kites. Tennis and sailing are possible in the surrounding villages. Horse-back riding is available at Offranville and Hautot-sur-Mer. There is a great golf course overlooking the sea between Varengeville and Dieppe. Paragliding and other flying sports in Saint-Aubin-sur-Scie.
Cultural and tourist activities
The house is located next to the
“Bois des Moutiers”, one of the most beautiful flower parks in France. Nearby there is also the William Farcy Floral Park, a charming flower park in Offranville. In the neighbouring village of Vasterival there is the magnificent
park of Vasterival, owned by Princes Sturdza. The largest collection of hortensias in the world (more than 1000 types) can be visited in Varengeville (
Shamrock collection). The
castle of Miromesnil, where Guy De Maupassant spent his youth, is certainly worth a visit, as well as the
Manoir d’Ango, the château home of Jehan Ango, a pirate and one of Dieppe's most historically flamboyant characters.
The
castle-museum of Dieppe is witness to the city’s rich past (ivory trade).
The coast and the countryside are rich of picturesque villages:
Veules-les Roses,
Saint-Valery-en-Caux,
Etretat,
Luneray,
La Chapelle-sur-Dun...
The house is well situated to visit Claude Monet's
Giverny gardens,
the D-Day Normandy beaches, and for day trips to
Paris or
Rouen.
Culinary
The
“Auberge du Relais” is the restaurant in Varengeville, with a good menu, friendly staff and good prices. In the day it is a brasserie where you can have a bite in the garden.
In the Cidrerie of the
Castle of Varengeville you can buy local products (cider and honey).
In Vasterival (Ste Marguerite-sur-Mer), a neighbouring village, there is the restaurant of
“La Terrasse” (with sea view).
In the William Farcy Floral Park in Offranville there is Le Colombier, a fine-dining restaurant.
On the other side of Varengeville, in Pourville-sur-Mer, you have the “Huitrière”, where you can eat oysters and sea fruits on the terrace overlooking the sea (not to be missed). Further up, “Les Régates”, a bar/restaurant with a swinging atmosphere, also on the sea.
Directions
From Dieppe, take the road along the coast (D75) – direction Saint-Valéry-en-Caux, pass Pourville-sur-Mer. When you arrive in Varengeville-sur-Mer, pass the shops, take a right at the Auberge du Relais and you are in the Route de l’Eglise (the church is at the end of the road – you cannot go any further except down the cliffs in the sea….) The house is right after the entrance of the Bois des Moutiers, on the right (you cannot see it, because it’s hidden by the trees). There is a chain closing the driveway.
